TEMPO Spaceboat 2000
The idea
What happened when two almost 2 meter tall sailors banged their heads during a heated spinnaker manouevre in a small cockpit. That was the moment when the idea of Tempo was born; the idea of a boat with enough large cockpit for a big crew. This boat shouldn't be a large heavy barge but rather a simple, small and really fast. She should have comfortable space for weekend and holiday cruising by a family. She should be simple and easy to sail even with a small crew, especially when there are growing young sailors in the family. Could a modern raceboat have all this?
This was the idea from where designer Jussi Mannerberg started his work to design modern spacious sportboat Tempo. The first showing of the boat (raceboat) was in the Helsinki International boat show 1999. This year a new cruising-model has been introduced.
Main concept
This new concept is the result of a long period of design work. Tempo is one of the first production boats where design has been totally done three dimensionally with the computer. The performance and structure of the Tempo was analysed carefully with advanced computer aided techniques with no stones unturned.
The main emphasis in the design has been in excellent sailing performance and very airy interior. Tempo is ideal for families and everybody who wants to enjoy easy sailing with a smaller boat but have interior of a larger boat. All this without any compromises in performance and speed.
One of the main principles on the design of Tempo has been ergonomics and safety. Special attention has also been given to visual design. Spacious and luminous interior gives maximum comfort for the family both at sea and in the port. There is plenty of space for gear and sleeping. There are two berths for adults in the bow and in the large aft bunk huge space for this size boat.
The boat
Tempo has a modern almost vertical bow and wide hull form, a tall 7/8 fractional rig with masthead spinnaker attached to a fixed bowsprit. The secret of the speed is in the deep and narrow leadkeel fitted with a huge bulb. The rudder is also very deep and narrow and therefore giving an excellent feel and control of the helm. The rudder has been constructed with carbon fiber.
Human has been the object in the design of the Tempo; sailing must be easy and fun. The large cockpit and a smooth and round coachroof with large windows dominate the deck. All the controls have been lead aft to the cockpit. All this to increase comfort. The boat is easy to handle and sail even with a small crew without compromising performance.
The interior on Tempo is very spacious and luminous. She has the space of a larger yacht. The separate fore and aft cabins of the Tempo have four full berths for adults. The settees will additionally provide berths for two children. The spacious main cabin is large enough to accommodate 4 -5 persons to dine and socialise.
Tempo is manufactured from very high quality materials. The hull and deck are hand laminated from various types of uni-directional fibers by using a high quality isopthalic polyester resin, core materials and gelcoats. The keel is attached to a longitudinal high strength steel frame, which is bonded to the hull and bulkheads. Mast compression is also taken by the same steel frame by two vertical struts inside the boat. With this configuration a very stiff, safe and light structure can be reached.
There have been many improvements from the first racing-model to the new cruising-model. Now a 9 hv dieselengine is standard equipment. Separate spacious enclosed toilet has been equipped with a washbasin and a holding tank according to the new environmental requirements.
Racing
Although Tempo is a familyboat it is also a fast racing boat. In first year Tempo’s racing results were excellent. Tempo won 1999 Finish National Championship in offshore racing under Jussi Mannerberg’s command. Tempo was also second in ranking list. The two Tempo boats (sponsored by H2O sportswear and Finnair leisure) won also many other races last summer. This year the both Tempo’s are still competing: the H2O boat under same command and the other Tempo with women team under name Team Audi TT.
