Mannerberg 100 "Miss Charlotte": A dream comes true!

A dream

The name of this new superyacht is after two girls: daughter of the CEO of the company (Exclusive Charters Ans) that owns the yacht and daughter of the designer happened to have almost the same first names. Charlotte and Charlotta will be the lucky godmothers of this new superyacht designed by Jussi Mannerberg.

Miss Charlotte is the largest yacht ever designed by a Finn. The designer Jussi Mannerberg describes the yacht as a dream come true. A dream of the owner to have a large yacht capable of world circumnavigation and a dream of the yacht designer to become a superyacht designer.

Miss Charlotte is not just another large superyacht but a yacht that will set the pace in the industry. The performance and the technological advances made in the design are a long leap in the large sailing yacht design. The Builder of the Mannerberg 100 is Yachting Developments NZ Ltd from Auckland, New Zealand. The yacht was launched at the end of May 2000 and first sailing trials were held on 2nd of June 2000. On the first sailing the speeds encountered onboard were a slight surprise to the boat builders and crew onboard. The yachts upwind speed was immediately in the trial sailing over 11 knots and downwind speed well over 15 knots with just the jib on. The yacht is performing like a high performance sailboat but has the handling of a gentle and very comfortable cruising boat. Again a Mannerberg design but this time in a very large size.

The boat

Miss Charlotte is a very large yacht with a luxurious accommodation for large number of guests and crew. Great effort has been made to create a new level of comfort onboard for the guests of Exclusive Charters, a Norwegian company specialising in corporate and very exclusive charters.

The design, styling and structural design of Miss Charlotte is down to smallest details from the hands of Jussi Mannerberg, a Finnish naval architect who has run the yacht design firm for the past ten years. The design was started in winter 1998 and a complete computer model of the boats’ interior and exterior was used in visualising the design and layout.

Technology

Modern technology has been used through whole the project. In planning phase computer programs were used to modelling of shapes and performance prediction. In construction phase the modern technology played also important role. Owner was in Norway, the designer in Finland and construction took place in New Zealand - problems? With help from modern technology this caused no problems. Jussi and the owner could follow the construction almost live all the time: videos and digital photos and also normal Internet connections made this possible. This also reduced the time to be on place in New Zealand - detail of construction could be planned from Finland. Modern technology is also present in the yacht. All cabins include modern entertainment and advanced communication systems. Through the boats computer network connections there is always an Internet access available. In the main saloon there is a mega screen TV monitor where boats passage can be followed on the chartplotter display.

Interior

A lot of effort has been put to design of the interior. It is built of timeless teak in ship style but with a touch of modern simplicity and soft corners. There are three guest cabins and three crew cabins. The main saloon has panoramic view and seating for 10-12 people around a large teak table. Additionally there are four very comfortable chairs forming a more intimate corner for enjoying the sea views from the saloon. Main saloon has a large push button control sunroof, which is a unique feature in a superyacht. The interior has been design to fill even demanding taste to be luxurious, and there are many small fascinating details. For example bear taps in kitchen, lights in all make-up tables, and jacuzzi for four persons on the aft deck to mention few.

Systems and control

One main idea in designing the yacht was to make it easy to handle. Although the yacht is big, it can be handled even by one man. The control of the 35 meter carbon fiber mast and boom of the boat is handled by under deck hydraulic reel winches which are operated by a custom made Lewmar commander system. This enables a clean and simple deck layout with on deck winches just for gennakker control and backup. The transom door opens to provide access to a large garage for a 4.7 m RIB with 70 hp engine. The tender is lifted onboard with a hydraulically operated passarelle, which serves also as a crane. The control of all these functions is at the twin pedestals which have also two 15'' computer screens enabling full monitoring of the boats navigation, engines, tankage, etc. The helmsman can even check the weather charts on the Internet while steering the boat.

The secret of the high performance is based on the light displacement and a very low resistance hull form of the yacht. The performance is assisted with two waterballast tanks that can both take 3 tons of water on either side. The control of the ballast is push button on deck or at the inside steering position. Inside joysticks handle the steering. Despite the high performance emphasis the boats draft is only 2.9 meters, which enables easy access to ports around the world. A special steel structure was designed to take the loads from the keel to the carbon sandwich structure of the boat. The structural engineering of the boat was also done by specialists from the Mannerberg team.

Miss Charlotte was launched at the end of May 2000 in Auckland and she will be shipped to Europe for the Norwegian owner Exclusive Charters Ans. The boat will enter service at the end of July 2000 in Oslo.
